Alpha-gal Syndrome Now Reportable in Delaware

The Delaware Division of Public Health (DPH) has identified six cases of Alpha-gal Syndrome (AGS), making it a newly reportable condition in the state. AGS causes an allergy to mammalian meat due to lone star tick bites, presenting symptoms such as hives and gastrointestinal distress. New Illicit Drug Hitting the Streets: Medetomidine

Delaware’s Opioid Response Team (ORT) has issued a warning about a new illicit drug, medetomidine, a potent veterinary tranquilizer more powerful than xylazine. Not approved for human use, medetomidine can cause significant sedation, low heart rate, and, in extreme cases, central nervous system depression and death. Providers are advised to start overdose treatment with Naloxone and monitor symptoms. For more information, read the full article here.

State leaders push for med school

As Sussex County struggles through an acute shortage of primary care physicians, a long-term proposal to build a medical school has been gathering support while efforts are being made to find short-term solutions.

The Sussex Economic Development Action Committee commissioned a $100,000 study, completed in May, to determine the feasibility of establishing a medical school in Sussex County. Delaware is one of three states that does not have a medical school.
