Camp and Sports Physicals

If your child is heading to summer camp or playing a school sport, they will most likely be required to complete a physical exam before they can participate. Physicals help ensure that your child can participate in physical activities without getting sick or injured. As your premier partner in health, Atracare offers camp and sports physicals so children in the Lewes community can enjoy all the benefits of getting active.

What is Included in a Sports Physical?

A sports physical consists of two parts. The doctor will review your child’s medical history and perform a physical exam. The goal of the physical is to assess your child’s health and ability to safely participate in team sports or other physical activities.

Your child’s pediatrician will ask questions about family health, past or current illnesses and disabilities, surgeries, previous injuries, allergies, and medications. If your child has asthma, diabetes, or any other mental or physical conditions that could affect their ability to safely play sports, you should let the doctor know. Answering all questions honestly will ensure that the pediatrician can make an accurate assessment of your child’s health. Most often, your answers will not affect your child’s eligibility to play sports or attend camp.

During the physical examination, your child’s height and weight will be measured. The doctor will listen to their heart and lungs and take their blood pressure. Your child’s vision, posture, and flexibility will also be evaluated during the exam.

Are Sports Physicals Different for Males and Females?

For the most part, sports physicals are the same for boys and girls. Females may be asked questions about their menstrual cycle if they have started puberty. They will also be evaluated for athlete’s triad if they are extremely active.

Questions about drug, alcohol and steroid use are asked during sports physicals for both males and females.

Benefits of Getting a Sports Physical

Even if your child isn’t required to have a physical to participate, it’s still a good idea to bring them in before they start a new sport or physical activity. Your child’s pediatrician can provide guidance on training, stretching, and avoiding injuries like broken bones and concussions.
