What is a Urinary Tract Infection? (UTI)

Urinary tract infections (https://www.webmd.com/women/guide/your-guide-urinary-tract-infections)  affect your urinary system and can cause intense pain and more severe complications if left untreated. If you have a UTI, we understand how uncomfortable the burning, pressure, and frequent urination can be. At Atracare, we offer same-day testing for urinary tract infections so you can get relief right away.

There are three types of UTIs, so you need to talk to a doctor so you can get diagnosed and receive the proper treatment and medication. Women suffer from UTIs much more frequently than men because they have shorter urethras, making it easier for E. coli bacteria to enter the urinary system. E. coli is the most common cause of urinary tract infections in both men and women.

How Can I Get Rid of a Urinary Tract Infection?

The most common treatment for a urinary tract infection is an antibiotic prescription. Your doctor may also prescribe phenazopyridine to ease the pain caused by your urinary tract infection. This medication will cause your urine to turn dark orange or yellow, but the coloring is harmless. You should drink lots of water, avoid taking baths and having sexual intercourse, and take the antibiotics as prescribed to heal the infection as soon as possible.

Can I Get Rid of a UTI at Home?

A quick Google search for at home UTI remedies will pull up hundreds of websites claiming to have the cure for urinary tract infections without a trip to the doctor. While at-home remedies like cranberry juice and heating pads may ease the pain, antibiotics are the most effective solution for quickly getting over a UTI. If you need to take an over-the-counter phenazopyridine supplement until you can see a doctor, you may experience pain relief. However, you should make an appointment or come into our urgent care clinic as soon as possible to tackle the root of the problem before the bacteria causes a kidney infection. UTI symptoms can make driving to and waiting in the clinic extremely painful. You can use Atracare’s telehealth services to meet with one of our doctors from the comfort of your home.

How Long Does it Take to Get Rid of a UTI?

Urinary tract infection symptoms can disappear in as little as a day if you start taking the medications close to the onset of symptoms. Antibiotic courses can last for several weeks, and its extremely important to continue taking your antibiotics even after you feel better. Stopping the medication before the bacteria is completely gone can put you at risk for having a reoccurring UTI.
