Congratulations to Kelly Palekar

Last week, the Delaware Nursing Association had its inaugural Daisy event in Dover, Delaware, where they recognized two direct care nurses throughout the state. Kelly Palekar, our psychiatric nurse practitioner in the mental health department, was given a distinguished honor and recognition for her direct patient care skills. Kelly was selected due to her care, compassion, and dedication to her patients each day.

About the Daisy Award:

Nurses every day go above and beyond to not only provide patients and families with excellence in clinical care but also compassion. At The DAISY Foundation, we aim to honor them by showing our profound gratitude for all that they do. The DAISY Award is a recognition program to celebrate and recognize nurses by collecting nominations from patients, families, and co-workers. It is run by our partners as a way to thank nurses for the care and kindness they provide.

About Kelly Palekar, as told in her Bio

As a Sussex County native, I am excited to join Atracare Health and have the opportunity to care for those living and visiting the Cape region!

I was born in Philadelphia and grew up just outside of Lewes. As a Cape Henlopen graduate and field hockey state champion, I pursued my dream of playing field hockey as a D1 athlete at Syracuse University. I went on to graduate with my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Business from Assumption College in Massachusetts and started my career in banking at WSFS, Wilmington Savings Fund Society in Lewes, DE. In addition to working at the bank, I enjoyed participating in non-profit community programs in Sussex County including Meals on Wheels and Teach Children to Save. It was during this time of helping others, my desire to focus on the medical needs of the community began. In doing so, I made the decision to leave banking and pursue my dream of becoming a nurse.

Treating Cold and Flu Symptoms at Home: What You Can Do to Feel Better

This article explains how most healthy people can manage cold/flu symptoms at home using over-the-counter medicines and supportive care. It breaks down what helps specific symptoms—acetaminophen or ibuprofen for fever and aches, decongestants for congestion (with cautions about blood pressure and rebound congestion), antihistamines for runny nose/sneezing, and cough suppressants or expectorants depending on the cough type—plus soothing options for sore throat like lozenges, warm liquids, saltwater gargles, and honey (for ages 1+). It warns against doubling up on the same active ingredients (especially acetaminophen in multi-symptom products like DayQuil/NyQuil) and encourages asking a pharmacist if unsure. It also lists emergency symptoms and high-risk groups who should seek medical advice, and emphasizes rest, fluids, humidifier use, and sleep as key to recovery.
