Cancer Screening with Annual Bloodwork

Cancer Screening with Annual Bloodwork

Did you know that several types of cancer can be detected in your blood? Even if you are young and healthy, it is important to have your blood drawn annually so you can form a baseline for the markers that are used to screen for cancer. Prostate cancer, kidney cancer, leukemia, and lymphoma are a few of the most common cancers we can screen you for when you get your bloodwork done at Atracare Health.

Prostate Cancer Screening

For males, prostate screening beginning at age 45 is extremely important. According to the CDC, approximately 13 out of 100 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Considering those statistics, males should have a prostate specific antigen (PSA) test added to their annual bloodwork when they turn 45. This test looks at how much of the antigen is present in your blood sample. If your number is high, then your doctor will want to monitor you over the next few years to see how it trends. Interventions like prostate removal surgery may be necessary if your bloodwork shows a high risk for prostate cancer.

Kidney Cancer Screening

Kidney cancer can be detected in bloodwork if you show a high level of serum creatinine. Serum creatinine is a natural by-product of metabolism that is processed and removed by the kidneys. If your kidneys aren’t functioning properly, your blood will show a high level of serum creatinine.

Leukemia and Lymphoma Screening

From your CBC, we are able to see if your red and white blood cell levels are abnormal. This can sometimes be an indication of leukemia or lymphoma. Your initial bloodwork results will serve as a baseline that we can use to compare future results and stay on top of any concerns that arise.
