Atracare Expands Specialty Care With New General Surgery Services

Atracare is expanding its specialty services with the addition of general surgery, bringing modern surgical care and a patient-centered approach to the Southern Delaware community.

The goal is simple: when surgery is needed, choose an approach that makes the most sense for the individual patient and the condition being treated. Whenever appropriate, Atracare’s general surgery team prioritizes robotic-assisted and laparoscopic techniques to perform procedures through smaller incisions and support a more comfortable recovery.

What Is Minimally Invasive Surgery?

Traditional open surgery may require a larger incision to allow the surgeon to access the area being treated. Laparoscopic and robotic-assisted surgery take a different approach.

During laparoscopic surgery, surgeons use small incisions and specialized instruments, including a camera that provides a view inside the body. Robotically assisted surgical systems can also allow surgeons to operate through small incisions while controlling specialized instruments.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration explains that robotic-assisted surgical devices can help facilitate minimally invasive surgery and assist surgeons with complex tasks in confined areas of the body. The surgeon remains in control of the instruments throughout the procedure.

The Potential Benefits of a Minimally Invasive Approach

Not every operation or every patient is suited for minimally invasive surgery. However, when laparoscopic or robotic surgery is appropriate, it can offer several potential advantages.

Quicker Recovery

One of the biggest goals of minimally invasive surgery is helping patients return to their normal routines sooner.

Because laparoscopic procedures generally use smaller incisions than traditional open surgery, patients may experience a faster recovery depending on the operation and their individual health. MedlinePlus notes that patients undergoing laparoscopic procedures can recover more quickly than with comparable open procedures in many circumstances.

Smaller Incisions and Less Scarring

Laparoscopic and robotic-assisted procedures are performed through one or more small incisions rather than a single large surgical opening.

Smaller incisions can mean less visible scarring and may also contribute to less postoperative discomfort. The FDA has noted that minimally invasive surgery can help reduce pain, scarring and recovery time following certain surgical procedures.

An Approach Designed Around the Patient

Technology is only part of modern surgical care.

At Atracare, the decision to perform a procedure robotically, laparoscopically or through another surgical approach is based on what is best for the individual patient.

The type of condition, the complexity of the procedure, the patient’s health and other clinical factors all play a role in determining the appropriate surgical approach. The FDA similarly advises patients to discuss the benefits and risks of robotic-assisted surgery—as well as alternative treatment options—with their physician because robotic surgery is not appropriate in every situation.

Personalized Surgical Care From Consultation Through Recovery

Surgery is not a one-size-fits-all decision.

Two patients with similar diagnoses may have different medical histories, risk factors, goals and treatment needs. That is why Atracare’s approach emphasizes evaluating the entire patient before deciding how a procedure should be performed.

When robotic or laparoscopic surgery provides an appropriate option, the surgical team can use those techniques. When another approach is better suited to the patient’s condition, the treatment plan can be adjusted accordingly.

The focus is not simply on using the newest technology. It is on using the right technology for the right patient at the right time.

Bringing Modern General Surgery to Southern Delaware

The addition of general surgery expands Atracare’s growing network of healthcare services and gives local patients another option when they need surgical evaluation or treatment.

For patients who may need surgery for a hernia, gallbladder condition, digestive disorder, soft-tissue mass or another condition, the first step is a surgical consultation. During that visit, the surgeon can review the diagnosis, discuss available treatment approaches and determine whether robotic-assisted, laparoscopic or another type of surgery is most appropriate.

At every stage, Atracare’s philosophy remains the same: do whatever is best for the patient.
