What to Expect During Your First Postpartum Wellness Consultation in Lewes, Delaware

In this short video Dr. Alexandra Cox PA-C discusses expectations for your first Postpartum Wellness consultation.

“The Postpartum Wellness Program at Atracare Health was created to fill the gap in care between your OBGYN appointments. Most women only see their OBGYN at six weeks postpartum and one year postpartum. Our goal is to close that gap and provide new mothers with an opportunity to check in, ask questions, and get the care they need to feel their best.”

How Dr. Alexandra Cox is Helping New Parents Navigate Postpartum Wellness

No two postpartum experiences are alike. Some new mothers may need help physically, while others may need to focus more on mental health care. Many of our postpartum wellness patients need help with things like lactation, breastfeeding, stress, anxiety, fitness, and postpartum depression. Dr. Alexandra Cox will be able to talk with you and answer your questions. She will also be able to prescribe you any medications you need and get you connected with specialists like lactation consultants, pelvic physical therapists, and behavioral therapists if needed.

Topics we’re able to cover in the consultation:
  • Mood changes during pregnancy
  • Mood changes postpartum
  • Stress management
  • Postpartum depression
  • Sleep difficulties (Mom)
  • Exercise during pregnancy
  • Exercise postpartum
  • Breastfeeding challenges

Joining the Postpartum Wellness Program

Before your appointment Dr. Alexandra Cox will have you fill out a questionnaire that asks about your health history, pregnancy and delivery history, and mental health. She will also ask about your goals for the session and what specifically you need assistance with. This questionnaire serves as a base to help make your first appointment run smoothly. You will be able to select a convenient day and time for your appointment, and babies are welcome to come along.

Why Postpartum Wellness Care is Important

Pregnancy is hard on a woman’s body and causes significant physical and hormonal changes. After giving birth, new mothers have to care for their newborn while trying to get the exercise and rest needed to heal their bodies and reduce stress. There is no playbook for raising a child, so many new moms have a lot of questions. Having a healthcare provider to talk to regularly can make navigating motherhood easier.

One of the most important reasons for postpartum wellness care is to help mothers who are struggling with depression and anxiety after giving birth. Postpartum depression affects approximately 10-20% of mothers. There is no shame in needing help or even medication if it relieves your symptoms. You can reach out to us and get the care you need at Atracare Health.
